Photograph supplied by 4R Farm. At the foot of Montana's Tobacco Root Mountains, the seasons have a way of reminding everyone that nature keeps its own calendar. Spring rarely arrives when expected. Summer is beautiful and far too brief. By the time autumn settles across Madison County, the work has already turned toward harvesting the last herbs, preparing for the first hard frost, and readying the farm for winter. For Jennifer and Karl Renne, 4R Farm is both a family home and the foundation of a growing Montana heritage brand. What began as a new chapter for their family has evolved into something neither initially set out to create—a business that brings together botanical wellness, heritage care, provisions, and thoughtfully crafted gifting. The farm itself remains central to that story. Gardens and herbs grow alongside the daily activity of chickens, pigs, honeybees, and two ever-present dogs. Ponds, a creek, and the surrounding mountains provide a landscape that changes dramatically with the seasons, while the demands of caring for the property give structure to daily life. But 4R Farm is about more than the land it occupies. It reflects the Renne family's belief in the value of meaningful work, careful stewardship, and craftsmanship rooted in purpose and place. Where Purpose Took Root The first botanical balms made at 4R Farm were never intended for sale. After nearly two decades serving as a CIA Operations Officer, much of that time spent overseas in demanding environments, Jennifer was ready for a different chapter. Karl, a former Marine Corps officer and retired CIA Paramilitary Operations Officer, brought his own extensive background in service and operations. Together, they established a life in Montana centered on their three daughters, faith, family, and the work of building something of their own. Personal health challenges brought unexpected meaning to that transition. Following a traumatic brain injury, a melanoma diagnosis, and prophylactic bilateral mastectomies, Jennifer became increasingly discerning about the ingredients and products she used. Her interest in botanical preparations developed into a practice of studying, formulating, and refining balms crafted with whole-plant herbal infusions, traditional fats, and Montana beeswax. What began as a response to her own needs gradually became something she wanted to share with others. His work spans the operational, technical, and production systems that support 4R Farm, as well as the custom-gifting and design capabilities that have become an important part of its identity. Together, they have built a business where provenance, stewardship, and craftsmanship are not merely ideals, but guiding principles reflected in the work itself. From the Land The rhythm of 4R Farm is closely tied to the botanicals grown or responsibly foraged on the property. Calendula, chamomile, lemon balm, yarrow, sage, and other herbs are tended through the growing season, harvested at appropriate times, and carefully dried or infused for use in botanical preparations. Knowing an ingredient from its earliest growth through its final use brings a particular understanding of its value. There is a meaningful difference between purchasing a finished extract and watching a plant weather a late Montana frost, harvesting it by hand, and preparing it for the months ahead. That relationship between origin, process, and finished product is carried throughout the 4R collections. Botanical Wellness offers intentional care for skin, body, and daily ritual, crafted with whole-plant infusions, traditional ingredients, and a deep respect for season and place. The Signature Collection serves everyday skincare, body care, and grooming; GENTLE Care considers the needs of sensitive skin and recovery seasons; and the PRO Line provides botanical preparations developed for professional practitioners. IRON R | Heritage Home & Ranch Care extends the philosophy of stewardship to the materials that furnish and sustain daily life. Formulated for the care of leather, wood, metal, and stone, the collection reflects an appreciation for useful things and the craftsmanship behind them. Whether maintaining a well-worn leather piece, protecting a wood surface, or caring for the materials of home and ranch, IRON R is rooted in preservation, utility, and respect for what has been made to last. PROVISIONS | SAVON + BAR R brings that same attention to the everyday rituals of home and table. SAVON, the farm's artisan goat milk soap collection, marks the first release in what is envisioned as a growing collection of treasured bathing rituals. The five inaugural soaps offer distinctive botanical and aromatic experiences, bringing thoughtful ingredients and a sense of occasion to a familiar part of daily life. Alongside SAVON, BAR R celebrates the culinary side of the farm. Harvest finishing salts bring together carefully selected ingredients, including farm-grown garlic and herbs, while the distinctive Distillery Salts developed in collaboration with Willie's Distillery in Ennis reflect a shared appreciation for Montana provenance, craftsmanship, and the pleasures of gathering around the table. Together, SAVON and BAR R represent an expanding vision for provisions: familiar essentials thoughtfully crafted to bring care, character, and a sense of place into everyday living. CROSS R | Curated Gifting represents another important expression of the farm's heritage philosophy—and a growing part of its future. Centered on heirloom walnut goods, personalized craftsmanship, and intentional botanical balm pairings, CROSS R was developed around the belief that a meaningful gift should reflect both the occasion and the person receiving it. Each engraved walnut keepsake box offers an opportunity to create something personal. Designs may reflect a family name, a meaningful place, a significant milestone, or the identity of a business wishing to recognize clients and colleagues. Within the boxes, curated botanical selections bring together the care and craftsmanship of 4R's wellness collections. The approach brings personal and corporate gifting into a shared tradition: recognizing people and occasions through objects chosen with purpose. For Jennifer and Karl, CROSS R also reflects the complementary nature of their work. Jennifer's understanding of botanical care and thoughtful presentation meets Karl's technical skill and custom-design capabilities, allowing each project to be approached with attention to the recipient, the materials, and the story behind the gift. As the collection develops, its guiding emphasis remains on provenance, individual expression, and heirloom craftsmanship. The walnut box is not merely packaging but part of the gift itself—something intended to be kept, used, and remembered long after its original contents have been enjoyed. Across Botanical Wellness, IRON R, Provisions, and CROSS R, provenance, stewardship, and craftsmanship remain the common thread —rooting each collection in the materials, traditions, and sense of place that define 4R Farm. A Season for What Matters As winter settles across Madison County, life at 4R Farm moves into another rhythm. The gardens rest beneath the snow. The bees gather within their hives. Work turns toward the animals, the workshop, and the preparations that will carry the family through the colder months. Inside, botanical formulations continue to take shape, artisan soaps are prepared, walnut keepsakes are engraved, and the work of growing a business carries on alongside the familiar routines of family and farm life. The work is never entirely finished. There is always another season to prepare for, another idea to explore, another project waiting its turn. Yet that ongoing work is also part of what gives the place its character. For Jennifer and Karl, 4R Farm represents a life built around faith, family, and purpose —and a shared commitment to building something that honors the land, the people, and the traditions that have shaped their journey. It is a story still unfolding, guided by the seasons and grounded in the belief that provenance, stewardship, and craftsmanship are worth carrying forward. Explore 4R at www.4R.farm.
