PROVENANCE

From our corner

of Montana

PLACE, PEOPLE + THE WORK OF THE SEASON

Provenance is often understood as a record of origin - where something came from, who made it and how it arrived in our hands. But to us, it means something more.

It is the relationship between a thing and the place that shaped it. It is the knowledge held by the person who made it, the materials chosen with care and the reason the work was worth doing in the first place. Provenance gives an object context, but it also gives our lives a deeper sense of connection. It reminds us that very little of lasting value exists on its own.

Here in our corner of Montana, the seasons make those connections difficult to overlook. Winter reveals what has been tended well. It asks us to notice what provides shelter, nourishment, comfort and strength. It draws our attention to the work that continues quietly: animals cared for before daylight, meals made from what was stored away, homes prepared for gathering and people finding thoughtful ways to care for one another.

Provenance is not simply where something began. It is the relationship

between place, people, purpose and care.
